Unit 12 Project Proposal
Behind the scenes of a Music Production Video
Section 1: Rationale (Approx. 150 Words)
Throughout the first 11 units of the course I have learned just how much behind the scenes work goes into ensuring a smooth-running production, and how it takes a lot of planning, preparation and skill to make the final product look effortless.
My strongest skills in this course have always been in the doing- I like the hands-on approach and working with the public. Roles like the college tours, ushering and anything that involves communication with people.
I want to use my skills of communicating with people, with my new skills in podcast making that I have acquired, to put together a podcast on how a production comes about. I want to split it up into its parts and talk to the students about that role and the challenges and rewards of that role.
With the Covid restrictions in place, I need a proposal that can be dealt with remotely if necessary, and while I would prefer to meet with people in person, my podcast could be made online if needed.
Section 2: Concept (Approx 200 Words)
A ‘behind the scenes’ making of podcast. Talking to each member of the music video production team, including the tutors, to discuss their role in the process.
This will create a podcast that details how so many different things need to be considered before the video can be made e.g.:
-
costumes,
-
make-up,
-
lightning,
-
music,
-
postproduction,
-
direction,
-
concepts,
-
performers
and how they all came together to create the final product.
In order to ensure I ask the right questions I will make a survey to find out what my potential audience would most like to know, and then ask the same question set to each department / role. This means that when editing my podcast, I can either divide it by department OR by question, depending on what works best.
Section 3: Evaluation (Approx 150 Words)
My project will be in three parts:
-
PLANNING
Preparing and conducting the survey of potential questions, making sure that they work for each production role, and are interesting and will prompt different answers.
Working out how I will divide the roles, and who are my contacts for each part. Meeting everyone and explaining what I am doing and asking if they will give me 10 minutes of their time
-
RECORDING
Recording the interviews with the students. I need them to have started and have an idea of how it is going in their role. If time permits, I may go back near/ at the end of the project, and just ask them a quick final question of did anything change since they were last interviewed?
-
PRODUCTION
Compiling the podcast together and editing and publishing the final result.
I need to reflect at each stage to ensure I am on track, and I need to work out a time scale to ensure I get each section completed on time, to allow time to move on to the next.
Proposed Research Sources
I need to research:
-
What roles are there in music production?
-
What order do these come in?
-
What questions would students like to know about the roles?
-
How to write and conduct a short survey?
-
Best in person recording applications / best online?
